Australia is a large island that, together with the island of Tasmania (named after the Dutchman Abel Tasman), forms the country of Australia. The largest island consists of 3/4 of desert, in which various unique animals live, including the well-known kangaroos and walibis. Did you know that camels live in 'the red center' as the center of Australia is also called? Good to know for travel or vacation: Australia contains rainforest as well as desert and the great barrier reef is a well-known reef, a reef that certainly comes close to land in the Northern part above Cairns. This is also the area where the late Steve Irwin was stung by a stingray and did not survive. His family's zoo can still be visited in the town of Beerwa near Brisbane on the gold coast. From Perth it is nice to go to Rottnest island and make a trip through the wine regions and taste the Australian wine. Further north is the town of Monkeymia where wild dolphins come ashore every day to be fed. From the town of Exmouth it is possible to take a boat trip and go snorkelling with the whale shark. The aforementioned red center is really worth it: here are the Olga's and of course the Uluru (or Ayers rock). If you have access to a rental car or other transport, a visit to King's canyon is highly recommended. In the summer the mercury reaches more than forty degrees (Celsius), so make sure you have enough water per person.
